Annealing
Heating to a suitable temperature (varies with grade and chemistry) and cooling at a suitable rate (varies with grade and chemistry) to (without qualification) achieve the lowest possible hardness that is desired to facilitate cold forming/working or to enhance machineability. Additionally, there are some grades of steel that will not fully harden from a hardening heat treatment without first being fully annealed. For ferrous alloys, a very minimal amount of cooling must be used and requires many hours of furnace time. The cost of annealing should be factored into total fabrication cost. Producing Mills can provide raw material in the annealed condition.
