Annealing
Heating to a suitable temperature (varies with grade and chemistry) and cooling at a suitable rate (varies with grade and chemistry) to (without qualification) achieve the lowest possible hardness that is desired to facilitate cold forming/working or to enhance machineability. Additionally, there are some grades of steel that will not fully harden from a hardening heat treatment without first being fully annealed. For ferrous alloys, a very minimal amount of cooling must be used and requires many hours of furnace time. The cost of annealing should be factored into total fabrication cost.
